Woman staying cool on public transportation during the summer

With summer in full swing, the hot weather can start to put a damper on your commute. Whether you live in a big city or not, many people rely on public transportation to get them to and from their daily activities. The hot summer weather can make waiting at a bus stop or train station miserable.

Here are a few tips to help you stay cool on public transportation this summer!

Stay Hydrated

Standing outside in the blazing sun for long periods can lead to dehydration. Always carry a water bottle with you for instant and immediate hydration. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water – that’s your body saying you’re already dehydrated. Avoid caffeine and other dehydrating substances. You can still have your morning coffee, but make sure to drink plenty of water to offset the dehydrating effects of the caffeine.

Dress Light

Choose light fabrics in light colors. Natural fibers, like cotton, are much lighter than artificial ones, like polyester. Dark colors, like black or red, absorb the sun’s heat, and as a result, they will stay warmer than lighter colors, like white or tan.

Create Your Own Shade

It’s important to avoid direct sunlight whenever possible. Find a large tree or the shadow of a nearby building for shade while waiting for the bus. If natural shade isn’t available, carry an umbrella or sport a stylish sunhat, fedora, baseball cap, visor, or anything that keeps the sun’s rays off your face.

Invest in a Portable Fan

If there is no breeze outside or your transportation is hot and stuffy, you may need to create your own cooling breeze with a handheld fan. You can go old school with a bamboo folding fan, try something high-tech like a battery-operated personal fan or you can get creative and improvise with whatever’s around, like a folder or brochure!

Pro Tip: Applying ice packs or even cold compresses to your pulse points: wrists, neck, elbows, etc., can help you cool down fast. This one is easy for your morning commute since you can grab your ice pack from the freezer when you head out in the morning.
